Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions handled by SmartBadge sales and support personnel, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful.

A

How does the system SmartBadge work ?

The SmartBadge system is a simple patented/patent pending system using a numbered name badge and a small hand held PDA type device which facilitates networking at meetings. The system can be implemented at your meeting in very few steps. See SmartBadge Utilization page for more details.

B

Is the SmartBadge system a lead retrieval system?

The SmartBadge system is not currently designed as a typical lead retrieval system. Lead retrieval systems tend to be used at large convention/trade show settings. Although networking goes on at these venues, the primary task is collecting product/service information by the attendees from the exhibitors in each booth. The system is designed to facilitate networking at conferences and meetings where the number one reason for attending is to network. These venues tend to have people mingling during a break, or lunch, or dinner, while attending a learning session or listening to a speaker or presenter.

We do feel that there is an application for our patented method in the lead retrieval convention/trade show markets. We have identified the technology needed to adapt our method into this market. As well, we are continually upgrading and developing new products to fit many markets we have identified. New systems for other markets should be available in the near future.

C

Do the attendees keep the SmartBadge PDA's?

The SmartBadge system is designed so the individual PDA units are low cost, expendable units. This allows the meeting organizer the ability to provide their clients - the attendees - with a valuable networking tool which they keep. This also means the meeting organizer does not have to worry about return/collection and refurbishment of the units after the meeting.

D

What are the note and mark functions on the SmartBadge PDA's?

On the SmartBadge PDA's are two buttons labeled Mark and Note. The Mark button allows the attendee to place a small mark next to any name in the database. Once names are marked, the attendee can select "View by Marks" from the menu. Only the names marked will be displayed. The attendee can use this function to mark the people they want to meet or have met for example.

The Note button allows an attendee to select multiple notes to be added to each name in the database. The notes are numbered from 0-9 and are programmed during download. The ten notes can be anything the organizer sets them to for that meeting. For example "Meet Here", "Meet for Lunch", "Send Brochure", "Send RFQ", etc. An attendee can select any number of notes for each name in the database. When the data is downloaded to the attendee's computer when he or she get back to their office, the notes (and marks) are downloaded as well.

E

How long does it take to program the SmartBadge PDA's?

The SmartBadge PDA's are mass programmed in the docking in batches of 40 at one time. The downloading process is fast. It takes about 1 minute to download a typical 350 person database to a batch of 40 units in the docking station.

F

What about walk-ups to my meeting?

Walk-ups are handled by printing badges at the event or printing blank numbered badges before the event and either hand writing or labeling the attendee's name onto the numbered badge. The attendees data is entered into the SmartBadge software and sometime during the event the attendees are informed that there is an update of the SmartBadge PDA available. The attendee will write their number on the back of their own PDA and either drop it off at registration and come back or wait for the update. The update takes no more time than the original download and can be done as many times as needed.

Another benefit of the SmartBadge system is that it should help increase the number of pre-registered attendees. During the initial marketing for your event, you include a small description of the SmartBadge system and how it works. People will be excited to try this new networking system, and to make sure their name is included they will need to pre-register.
